Showing Us True Strength, Meet the Member Who's Blind And Fit
Meet VP, the life of the party who's proving that all you really need is determination, a sense of humor, and a supportive community.
A World Gone Dark
At 9 years old, VP lost his sight due to a rare genetic condition called Stargardt's disease. But instead of letting this challenge dim his spirit, he lights up the gym with his infectious energy and unstoppable drive.
Finding His Way
When VP first joined us, he took his first two weeks getting the lay of the land, learning where everything was and getting acquainted with our extensive workout equipment. Honestly, I'm still finding new equipment that I haven't used, so this is a great practice.
Blasting those Biceps
Without being able to see the metrics on machines, VP had to get creative. His solution? Free weights. "I can better gauge the weight because of size," he explains.
His favorites? Bench press and curls. Watch out, Arnold!
His Cardio Secret
For cardio, VP found his happy place on our spin bikes. "I can control the resistance and really get my heart rate up," he says. Fun fact, VP and I first met in a spin class. See our full spin class schedule here.
More Than Just a Gym
What VP loves most about WCF (aside from the fact he can walk to it) isn't just the equipment - it's the vibe. "Other gyms aren't very sociable, people just get in and get out," he notes. "Here, it's more chill."
VP seemed to have a connection with everyone, with member after member striking up conversation with him as soon as they saw him. This isn't just a guy who comes to the gym - this is someone who's clearly an integral part of our WCF community.
VP's Pro Tips for Gym Newbies
Start slow - Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither are six-pack abs.
Get to know your environment - don't be afraid to take time to learn where everything is.
Ask for help - our trainers and staff are here to support you, not judge you.
Finding Community Beyond the Gym
VP's journey with Stargardt's has led him to connect with others online who share his condition. "There's still a lot unknown about Stargardt's," he says, but there's strength in numbers.

The Takeaway
VP's story reminds us that true strength isn't about what you can see - it's about what you can do, feel, and achieve. It's about setting goals, crushing PRs, and building confidence, regardless of the obstacles in your path.
So the next time you're feeling intimidated at the gym, remember that everyone starts somewhere, that it's okay to ask for help, and that with the right attitude and community, you've got this.
