The REAL Meaning of Cinco de Mayo (Hint: It's Not Just Margaritas)

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

While most folks are gearing up for a day of margaritas and bad decisions, we wanted to take a sec to appreciate the real meaning behind this often misunderstood holiday.

First, a quick history refresh: Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexico's Independence Day (that's September 16th, for you trivia nerds).

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla in 1862, where the underdog Mexican army victoriously fended off the French forces.

Over time, it's evolved into a broader celebration of Mexican-American heritage and pride, especially here in the US.

So how can we honor the cultural significance of this day while still getting our fitness on? We got you.

Dance Like No Juan's Watching 💃🏽🕺🏽
Cardio machines? How about DANCE MACHINE. Zumba brings the real heat.

This Colombian-born dance workout incorporates all the best Latin styles to get your heart pumping and your hips moving. Fun fact: "Zumba" literally means "to move fast and have fun" in Colombian slang. Let's go!

Mark your calendar, our next Zumba class is Tuesday at 6:30PM

Fuel Up with Ancestral Superfoods 🌽🥑
Mexican cuisine is loaded with ancient, nutrient-dense ingredients like chia seeds, amaranth, nopales, and beans. These OG superfoods have been fueling generations of abuelitas and they're still staples in Mexican households today.

Fun fact: The compound capsaicin, found in chili peppers, has been shown to boost metabolism and help regulate blood sugar levels. Incorporate a dash of chili pepper or hot sauce into your pre-workout snack for an extra metabolic kick!

Support Local, Authentic Businesses 🌮🛒
Skip the Taco Bell drive-thru and seek out the real deal. Support genuine Mexican-owned restaurants, food trucks, and markets in your hood. Not only will you experience flavors that will make your taste buds do the salsa, but you'll also be supporting hardworking families and preserving culinary traditions.

Shoutout to our neighbors:

  • The Groovy Floret for organic, plant-forward Mexican-inspired dishes. www.thegroovyfloret.com open today from 11-3.

  • Novedades Prado for formalwear and a ton of other awesome goods for over 30 years! www.shopnovedadesprado.com open from 11-5 today.

Stay Hydrated, Stay Ready 💧
Look, we all know Cinco de Mayo can get a little loco. Between the salty snacks, spicy salsa, and maybe a cerveza (or three), it's easy to get dehydrated. Make sure you're sipping on plenty of water or naturally electrolyte-rich drinks like coconut water to keep your body balanced and ready for the next round of festivities.

Siesta for Your Gains 😴
After a day of non-stop celebration, your body needs some serious R&R. Take a cue from our Mexican hermanos and embrace the tradition of a sweet afternoon nap. Or just head to our recovery center for the recharge you need.

Hit Up the Real Party at the Waterfront 🎺

Tom McCall Waterfront is hosting a 3-Day fiesta, bursting with entertainment. It might not be St. Johns, but for entertainment, that's party central.
