Can You Be Fit And Fat?
Three weeks ago, we told you boxing could help fight cognitive decline. Now two major studies have revealed that your mind and body have even more requests on their wishlists.
The Research That Changes Everything
A study of 398,716 people just shattered conventional wisdom about fitness and longevity. Turns out cardiovascular fitness matters more than whatever number your scale decided to display this morning. The data showed fit people had similar mortality risks regardless of size, which is great news for those of us who keep trying to fit into our clothes from college.
Being unfit carried a 2-3 times higher mortality risk, regardless of what the scale said. These findings held true for both cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. In other words, your cardio fitness level might matter more than how tight your pants feel after the holidays.
The Brain Science Gets Better
A separate study examining aerobic exercise revealed that while you're busy counting down the minutes on the treadmill display, your brain is:
Building stronger neural networks than our WiFi 🤪
Improving memory to the point where you'll remember both your locker combination AND why you came to this side of the gym
Reducing inflammation so efficiently it's making your turmeric latte feel inadequate
Future-proofing itself against the inevitable moment when someone asks you to explain what cardio actually did for you
Putting Science Into Practice
At West Coast Fitness, we've always known that wellness comes in all shapes and sizes. Now science backs that up. Our focus is on sustainable fitness through:
Different cardio equipment for every kind of masochist
Group classes because if you're gonna suffer, you might as well do it as a team
Personal training to show you the way forward that's going to suck the least
Recovery tools for when tomorrow reminds you about today
Remember: Between boxing's cognitive benefits and cardio's brain-protecting powers, science has officially validated your relationship with the gym. Your neurons are just wondering why it took you so long to get the message.
Thinking about you,
Your West Coast Fitness Family
